You need to alternate between speeding and slowing down in order to avoid the other ships that are going to get on your route because bumping into other ships means losing the game.

Also, there is a number of rotations you have to make unharmed in order to clear a level, and if you do, you advance to the following one. Also, every time you go through a space gate you gain coins, so try to earn as many as possible.
